A Friendly Reminder if You Have Outdoor Furniture

back to Learning Hub Home

In the past five years, every state in the U.S. has been affected by a flood. Each year, flood damage insurance claims total roughly $3.5 billion nationwide. This year’s El Nino, according to experts, is expected to be one of.

This year’s El Nino, according to experts, is expected to be one of the strongest to date. Stronger, even, then the 1997-98 El Nino that caused over half-billion dollars in damage throughout California alone.

That said, it’s important to take protective measures now, before El Nino hits hard, to avoid damage caused by El Nino that could have otherwise been avoided.

Here’s what you should do right now to protect your backyard furniture and outdoor enclosures when El Nino arrives.

Store Outside Furniture in Enclosed Areas

If possible, store all patio furniture, benches, and yard décor in the garage or shed. Anything that can be lifted by strong winds and cause serious damage should be stored away.

If you cannot move all or some of your outside furniture for whatever reason, tie down all furniture securely. Place wood planks under table and chair legs to avoid water damage. Cover glass tabletops with plywood to protect the glass from shattering. Be sure to secure the plywood down so it will not blow in the wind and cause further damage.

Tend to Your Gardening

Trees weigh more when they have a lot of moisture. Cut substantial branches that may not withstand the heavy winds and rainfall caused by El Nino.

Walk around your yard and look for holes. Fill in all holes around your property so rainwater cannot pool inside them and cause significant damage to your yard and furniture.

Adequately Prepare Your Gutters & Drains

Remove your gutters of debris so water can properly flow out and drain properly. Then, after the first rainfall, clean your gutters again.

If you have them, make sure your drains are clean of debris. Additionally, make sure your yard drains properly, which is to say the water flows away from your home. Purchase materials, such as sandbags, to avert water from your property and backyard furniture.
